Who is Stephen Rodgers?

Stephen Rodgers is a composer and multi-instrumentalist whose work is written primarily for 12-string guitar, octave mandolin, mandocello, and piano. He approaches each instrument as its own voice, writing for the specific character, response, and tonal qualities of each individual instrument.

His 12-string compositions use alternate tunings, open strings, harmonics, and the interaction between paired strings as core elements of the writing. His mandocello work similarly embraces the instrument’s lower register and depth of tone.

Stephen’s music draws influence from artists such as Leo Kottke and Chris Thile, as well as composers like Maurice Ravel and Bill Evans. Much of his work is connected to the local land in Utah, including an ongoing collection of compositions centered around the islands of the Great Salt Lake.

Stephen has performed live since 2016 and has worked as a full-time musician since 2024. Alongside his solo work, he has performed and recorded with artists including Matthew and the Hope, Little Moon, Mindy Gledhill, and Debra Fotheringham.

His work has been presented by the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art as part of the Sacred West Symposium. He has performed in listening rooms, cafes, restaurants, private events, weddings, and concert venues. Solo performances typically range from 60–90 minutes and can be adapted to the needs of the venue.
